Writing Short Film Scripts

Short films are fast becoming one of the best ways to open doors in Hollywood. They are screened at every major festival from Cannes to Slamdance, are widely available online on YouTube and Vimeo, and can be entered in several on-line competitions. In addition short films are now being distributed internationally both theatrically and on iTunes. With this kind of exposure short films can launch your feature film career, help you gain recognition in the industry, hone your writing skills, provide a platform for a feature script, and give you an opportunity to experiment with new ideas, stories or cinematic techniques.

But short film screenplays are not just pared down feature films. They are their own unique form of storytelling with specific rules and structure. Because they are short they have the ability to deliver a quick, powerful emotional punch. In many ways this gives them greater impact than a feature which has to tease out the same affect over 90+ minutes. In order to write an effective short film writers need to be aware of the aspects of screenwriting that are unique to short films. This workshop will discuss the elements you need in order to write a successful short film script.
